Alfred's $175 lesson....Our AC trip
Ol’ Alfred paid $175 for a painful but helpful lesson in 2/4 Hold’em this past weekend at Tropicana and Showboat. Simply just played wayyyy too many hands.
A little about Alfred here: He sucks….there you have it…
A little bit more here: …his wife plays the game better and doesn’t play nearly as much as he does.
A few days before our trip, Alfred proudly announced that he was looking forward to AC and that he ponied up $20 to Shulman’s book (52 tips) to read before heading out. Showing me the book on the way up, I noticed that he only read 20 PAGES!!!! That’s all!?!?! The first 20 pages only covered the first 2 VERY VERY basic tips.
Dude?!?! 20 pages!?!? That’s all?
Yeah…been busy…plus reading makes me sleepy
Flipping through the tips….I showed the probably the most important tip: “Preflop…raise or fold if it is folded to you”...and no he didn’t follow that advice.
Moof and I sat down with Alfred at Tropicana 2/4 Friday morning. After about 2 ½ hours, his whole rack of whites ($100) slowly disappeared. I had Alfred to sit behind me and watch me play….
Our conversation was something like this:
“WTF?”
“Man I was getting good cards….Ace 4…Ace 6….Ace 3 suited but wasn’t catching or was enough to win”
“Huh?? FOLD THOSE!!!”
“I had an Ace….fold them?”
“yeah man….What if someone had an Ace Jack….your Ace 5 doesn’t look so good huh?”
“yeah…but….yeah you know…” (started to cry a bit) *actually not true…but he should’ve*
Moof and I joined Alfred for lunch at Johnny Rockets….we didn’t do too well….Me -$30…Moof -$44 (or so)…I was going up and down between -$40 and -$15….I didn’t get any cards for an hour or so….10-4, 6-9o, J3o…you get the picture…none of them were playable. The very first pot I won was from the BB…my 72o hit its 2nd pair at the turn (879 – 2). I bet…all folded (dang surprised)….I show my 72o…and I bet you my house that not a single person at that table knew that 72o is the worst starting hand in hold’em.
Anyways…at Rockets…I explained to Alfred some points and things to consider when playing his hands and how to play them. Then off to Showboat we go….did he followed my advice??
Well….sorta…Alfred started out playing about 25% of his hands (compared to 60% earlier)…and slowly did his stack grew…$100….$110….$120…$130…. Around that point I snapped at him for his sloppiness on how he stacks his chips...basically told him “Alfed…embarrassing…stack up your chips neatly man or get the hell out….so how are you doing?”
“pretty good….up about $30…am folding more hands like you told me to…etc etc etc”
“good…keep it up”
….but….remember this is the $175 lesson story….slowly but surely Alfred was seeing more flops and getting trapped by better hands….lost a major pot when his Q3 flush got manhandled by Moof’s Ace high flush…Why he was in the pot with Q3, I have no idea... his 67o bottom straight getting punked by Granny’s (QJ) higher straight...
After my cowboys (UTG) got bitch slapped by Granny’s boat (96o from middle position), I had enough….cashed out $105 for 4 hours of play…Moof played one more round before jumping out at +$125 (or so)….a few rounds later, Alfed’s flopped a set with his pocket fours and Grumpy flopped a straight….bet, raise, call….bet raise call….even with the board A2476, Alfred was sure his set was the best hand….Grumpy flips over his 35 SPADES….cashing out his remaining white chips….all 25 of them (-$75)….
So ‘Fred…$175 in the hole huh….wife gonna kill ya?
Nah…I had fun
Hmmm….I guess it was fun to play if you are not a serious player…but a painful $175 lesson it was...
Point of the story:….actually there isn’t a point…I just wanted to make fun of him….
Actually ‘Fred pretty much have a good idea on how to play well...sometimes a player just don’t drive 3 hours just to play a mean game of “fold’em” like I do.
Suggestion for Alfy:
1. Finish reading Shulman’s book and reread it again.
2. Pick up Lee Jones’ book and read it again…and again….and again
3. THEN pick up SSHE
4. Quit doing “web business” on the side and play more online poker for MONEY not play chips...and son…jump in the 50/1 game or higher not the .02/.04 limits
Alfred and his doggone pretty wife will be heading out to Foxwoods during the winter vacation. So there’s plenty of time between now and then to practice a mean game of “fold’em” my dear friend.
Taj had a 5/10 LO8 (no kill this time) table going….sweet!!!!....5-6 were seeing the flops…but…it was midnight…the wait list was 8 players deep…time to head back to Best Western Envoy Inn and call it a night…
Best Western a dump? Actually not bad considering we only paid $81 for it. Did the room smell?...no….Were the bathrooms clean?...yes….Bed(s) comfy?....Front desk people helpful/friendly?....friendly and helpful enough, no need for them to act like we are staying at Borgata…..so all in all, the room was decent…
